Monitor fades to black

Power on, monitor displays then fades all in a second. Power off then on, same. Display is fine. Circuit is fading out. Power adapter has been checked okay. VGA cable okay. Monitor is old if lightly used. Anyone ever repair such a failure?

FYI: i re-capped it to no avail.
