Computer Won't Boot Up After Upgrading to Windows 10 - Emmanuel Katto Uganda

Hi Everyone, I am Emmanuel Katto. I recently upgraded my Windows 7 computer to Windows 10, but now it won't boot up properly. When I try to start my computer, it displays a blue screen with an error message that says "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" and then restarts. This happens every time I try to boot up.

I've tried booting in safe mode, but it doesn't work. I've also tried using the Windows 10 media creation tool to repair the installation, but that didn't fix the issue either.

I'm not sure what could be causing this problem, as I didn't have any issues with my computer before the upgrade.

System Information:
  • Operating System: Windows 10 Home
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-2400
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Hard Drive: 512GB SSD
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060
I've tried Booting in safe mode, Using the Windows 10 media creation tool to repair the installation and checking for any loose connections or faulty hardware.

Can someone help?

Thanks!
Emmanuel Katto

The "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" error typically occurs due to issues with the storage drivers or corruption during the upgrade process. Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot and resolve this issue:
  1. Check BIOS/UEFI Settings:
    • Ensure that the SSD is recognized correctly in the BIOS/UEFI.
    • Verify that the SATA mode (AHCI, IDE, RAID) is set correctly. If it was changed during the upgrade, it could cause boot issues.
  2. Boot into Advanced Startup Options:
    • Start your computer and repeatedly press the F8 key (or Shift + F8) before Windows starts to load.
    • Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
  3. Run Disk Check and System File Check:
    • In the Command Prompt, run the following commands to check and repair the disk and system files:
      bash
      Copy code
      chkdsk /f /r
      sfc /scannow
  4. Update or Reinstall Storage Drivers:
    • Boot into the Advanced Startup Options and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
    • Once restarted, press the number key for Enable Safe Mode with Networking.
    • If you can boot into Safe Mode, update your storage drivers through the Device Manager.
  5. Rebuild the Boot Configuration Data (BCD):
    • In the Command Prompt, run the following commands to rebuild the BCD:
      bash
      Copy code
      bootrec /fixmbr
      bootrec /fixboot
      bootrec /scanos
      bootrec /rebuildbcd
  6. Check for Incompatible Software:
    • Sometimes, third-party software (like antivirus) can cause issues during an upgrade. Uninstall any non-essential software in Safe Mode.
  7. Perform a Clean Install:
    • If none of the above steps work, you may need to perform a clean install of Windows 10. Back up your data and use the Windows 10 media creation tool to create a bootable USB drive. Boot from the USB drive and perform a clean installation.
If the issue persists after trying these steps, there might be a deeper hardware compatibility issue or corruption that requires professional assistance.
